Oahu’s Second City expands as new Social Security office opens

Residents and dignitaries gathered together for the grand opening of the new Social Security Administration office in Kapolei, it’s right next to the library.

“To really complete the Second City, we need to provide great housing, jobs, but most importantly, services to the people so they don’t have to drive all the way into town. So this allows them to get the help they need for any of their social security needs,” Honolulu Councilmember Kymberly Pine said.

The opening of the social security facility completes the second phase of development for the Second City, something the developers are pleased about.

“Absolutely, the community is a sustainable community, when you have services and places of employment and this is one of those aspects that makes a full, fully grown mature community,” Avalon Development Group President and CEO Christine Camp said.

Community leaders see this as just one more step in the continuing development of ‘the Second City.’

“And with so many things happening out here with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands moving their headquarters out here, UH West Oahu opening up, Target and Costco, all of these things happening in the last couple of years. It’s just so important because it makes it so people don’t have to get on H-1 and suffer,” said Sen. Mike Gabbard (D) West Oahu.

The Kapolei office will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. except for Wednesdays when it closes at 11:30 a.m.
