One of Hollywood's top actors is backing a bill in Hawai'i that would create a sanctuary here for sharks.
This week, Leonardo DiCaprio tweeted his support saying, "Shark populations are in global decline and are critical to ocean health."
HB 553, "establishes an offense of intentionally and knowingly capturing, entangling, or killing a shark in state marine waters, and provides penalties and fines."
"Members in 2010, the legislature banned shark finning and products, but we failed to protect whole sharks from intentional killing. So this bill would correct that oversight to better protect these apex predators of the ocean," said Senator Mike Gabbard, Chair of the Agriculture and Environment Committee.”
Shark populations are in global decline and are critical to ocean health and resiliency. I support #Hawaii House Bill 553 to create a Sanctuary for Hawaii's sharks: https://t.co/bzwYRLrjWD @GovHawaii @RepScottSaiki
